How to pack your bedroom for a stress-free move
Moving soon? Find out how to pack your bedroom like a pro and settle in stress-free on your first night in your new home.

Pack your bedroom like a pro
Let’s be honest—moving home is physically and mentally exhausting. Between juggling boxes, kids, and schedules, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But when you pack your bedroom with a bit of planning, you can make the process smoother and ensure you still get a good night’s sleep the night before and after the move.
Pack your bedroom with care, keeping in mind that you’ll still need somewhere comfortable to sleep and your nighttime and morning essentials close at hand. On move day, make the bedrooms your first priority—there’s nothing better than collapsing into your own warm, familiar bed after a long day of unpacking chaos.
Want to skip the stress entirely? Give Reclaim Your Space a call—our expert team can help you pack, move, and settle in with ease.
1. Think about your new bedroom
Before you start to pack your bedroom, take a few minutes to visualise your new space. It’ll help you plan what to bring, what to let go of, and how to make your new room feel calm and functional from day one.
Ask yourself:
- Where will the bed go, and will it fit comfortably?
- How does the storage compare to what you have now?
- Do you still need your chest of drawers, or does your new wardrobe have built-in drawers?
- Will all your furniture fit—or is it time to let a few pieces go?
- Where are the power points, and will they affect furniture placement?
A quick sketch or measurement check now can save you a lot of stress later.
2. Pack an overnight bag
This is your sanity-saver move. When helping my mother-in-law relocate, I asked her to pack an overnight bag—she said she had, but forgot clothes for the next morning!
Before you start to pack your bedroom, grab a small suitcase or travel bag and pretend you’re going away for a weekend. Include:
- Pyjamas
- Clothes for the next couple of days
- Toiletries and medication
- Phone charger and any personal essentials
Keep this bag with you during the move so you can easily access what you need without digging through boxes.
3. Declutter as you pack
Packing your bedroom is the perfect time to declutter. Think of your move as a fresh start. Do you really want to bring along those holey socks, pilled jumpers, or leggings with crunchy elastic?
Remember: movers often charge by the hour, so the fewer boxes you take, the less you’ll pay. Plus, a lighter load makes unpacking that much easier.
When you move, it’s also a chance to refresh your wardrobe. Say goodbye to the old scraggly pyjamas and treat yourself to something new once you’re settled in.
Pro tip: Matching hangers make a huge difference! Velvet flocked hangers not only save space but also give your wardrobe that beautifully organised, boutique feel.
4. Packing clothes the smart way
Clothing is usually the biggest category when you pack your bedroom. Here’s how to make it easier:
Moving Bags
We love using sturdy moving bags for clothes and linen. They’re quick to fill, hold a lot, and are easier for movers to load than boxes. Use smaller bags inside to separate socks, pants, and shirts if you’re mixing categories.
Drawers
If your furniture is being moved, you can often leave clothes in the drawers—just secure them with shrink wrap. It saves unpacking time later, though removalists will need to keep the drawers flat.
Hanging clothes
No need to take clothes off their hangers! Group 5–6 items together and slip a garbage bag over the top, poking hangers through the opening. Voilà—instant garment bags! Layer them in a suitcase or moving bag for protection and easy unpacking.
For formal wear, port-a-robes are a great investment—they prevent creases and can double as temporary wardrobes if needed.

5. The bed
Most removalists can dismantle and reassemble your bed for you, but if you’re doing it yourself, try this:
- Take photos as you dismantle
- Use ziplock bags for screws and tools
- Label everything clearly (Left/Right, Top/Bottom)
- Sleep on the mattress on the floor if you need to take the frame apart the night before
Keep one or two moving bags free for your bedding so you can strip the bed as soon as you get up in the morning and pack it easily.
6. Valuables and breakables
Use medium boxes for packing breakables or heavier items. Keep valuables close to you during the move. Use smaller boxes or ziplock bags for jewellery and fragile items. Handbags and toiletry bags can double as protective storage.
